Confidence Building with Puppies

8-12 weeks is a crucial time for puppies. It’s important to build confidence and socialize your new puppy to as many new positive experiences as possible. It’s a good idea to follow the rule of 7:

  • 7 new surfaces = grass, dirt, gravel, wood, concrete, carpet, or wood chips
  • 7 types of play objects = big & small balls, fabric toys, fuzzy toys, squeaky toys, or cardboard
  • 7 new locations = front yard, back yard, basement, kitchen, car, laundry room, or bathroom
  • 7 different types of people = babies, children, seniors, people with walkers or wheelchairs, people in uniform, people wearing hats, or men with beards
  • 7 challenges = climb around inside a box, go through a tunnel, climb steps, go over obstacles, run around a barrier, or in/out doorways
  • 7 meal offerings = feed out of metal, plastic, cardboard, paper, or food dispensing toys *also feed in various locations
  • 7 noises = banging pots, thunder, loud music, sirens, traffic, vacuums, crowds, or tools

Use lots of treats and praise whenever introducing your puppy to anything new. We want all of these introductions to be positive! If your puppy shows any fear, it’s important NOT to coddle him, instead help him succeed!
